Are treated gemstones less valuable?

Treated gemstones are usually worth less than the natural, untreated versions with the same shade, size, and clarity. Even though normal heat treatment is pretty accepted across the trade, stronger kinds of processing really slash the stone’s resale value.

Nearly 90% of sapphires and rubies go through routine heat treatment to boost the colour and reduce inclusions, and that becomes a common pricing reference. Still, a fully unheated stone with the same visual appeal is exceptionally hard to find, and it can demand a major premium. On the other hand, intrusive methods like beryllium diffusion, glass filling, or dyeing change the stone’s chemistry or internal structure in a permanent way. That makes the value fall to a fraction of either a natural gem or a gem that was only conventionally heated.
