Can moonstone crack easily?

Yes, moonstone feels quite delicate; it can crack or cleave easily when it gets hit hard or experiences extreme temperature shifts. It has a Mohs hardness level of around 6 to 6.5, and it also shows perfect cleavage, so it is vulnerable to physical stress, even from things that seem minor.

Due to the way its internal atomic structure is arranged, a strong impact can cause a moonstone to split cleanly right along its cleavage planes. Because of that, it is usually not the best choice for everyday wear rings or bracelets, unless it is seated in a very protective bezel setting. If you want to keep it looking good, it should be cleaned gently with warm, soapy water instead of ultrasonic cleaning or steam cleaners, since those methods can trigger fracturing.
