Can perfumes damage gemstones?

Yes, alcohol, essential oils, and synthetic compounds found in perfumes can permanently damage porous and organic gemstones. If there is direct contact, the surface can lose its vibrancy, look a bit less shiny, or even break down in a slow structural way over time; you might not notice it right away.

Organic stones like pearls, coral, and amber are especially vulnerable to the solvents in perfume. Those solvents can wear away the outer layer and make the natural glow go away. Porous pieces such as opal and turquoise can soak up the liquids too, which leads to stains that usually cannot be reversed. As a general guideline for jewellery care, perfume, hairspray, and cosmetics should be put on first, then left to dry fully before wearing any gemstone jewellery.
