Can alexandrite be lab-grown?

Yes, alexandrite can be made in a lab, using advanced techniques like Czochralski pull, floating zone, or flux melt processes. In general, these engineered stones have the same chemical makeup, physical structure, and optical behaviour as naturally mined alexandrite.

Lab-made alexandrite also shows that famous colour change, meaning it swings from green in daylight to red in incandescent light, just like the real thing. Since natural alexandrite is exceptionally scarce and very expensive, lab-grown options feel more reachable for many buyers. Trained gemmological labs are able to tell synthetics apart from natural stones by looking at microscopic inclusions and specific growth patterns, using high magnification.
