Yes, if an amethyst is exposed for a long time to direct sunlight or strong ultraviolet (UV) light, the vivid purple tone can fade over time. This fading is permanent, and you cannot reverse it without specialised lab irradiation treatments.

That purple shade comes from particular colour centres that are related to iron impurities and the stone’s natural environmental radiation. UV light breaks down those centres, bit by bit, and the gem gets bleached into a much lighter colour, or even completely clear. So, to keep the colour saturation in place, store amethyst jewellery in a dark jewellery box when you are not wearing it, and keep it away from extended sun exposure while you are outside.
