Can emeralds fade over time?

Natural emeralds do not fade just because they have been in sunlight for a while, or because time passes; their own green mineral hue stays fully stable. Yet, their look can become dull, lighter, or even a bit chalky if the oils or resins used to fill their natural breaks dry up or wash away, which happens more than people think.

More than 90% of commercial emeralds get treated with cedar oil or polymer resins, mainly to raise clarity by sealing surface-reaching fissures. If you routinely expose them to hot water, aggressive chemicals, or ultrasonic cleaners, these layers are removed. Then the internal inclusions show up much more, and the overall colour appears less vivid. This kind of “fading” is often reversible when a professional jeweller cleans the stone properly and then reapplies the correct oil or resin.
