Can gemstones be worn in the shower?

It is generally not recommended to wear gemstone jewellery in the shower, because hard water minerals, soaps, and shampoos tend to leave a stubborn, dulling film on the stones. Also, hot water along with chemical body washes can really harm porous, organic, or otherwise chemically treated gems.

Even though exceptionally hard stones like diamonds and unheated sapphires will not really break down from a regular shower, the fast buildup of soap scum cuts down on how they throw light back, and that means less sparkle and overall brilliance. More delicate gems, for example, opals, pearls, emeralds, and turquoise, may take irreversible structural harm due to rapid temperature shifts as well as the harsh compounds inside exfoliating body washes. Keeping the jewellery off while showering every time stops residue buildup and helps extend the life of both the gemstone and the metal setting.
