Can peridot scratch easily?

Yes, peridot is pretty susceptible to getting scratched because it sits around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, falling squarely in that mid-range. So, it’s softer than common airborne dust, which often includes quartz, and it will also give way to many everyday objects, meaning you need careful handling pretty regularly.

It can work beautifully for fine jewellery, though. Still, peridot isn’t the best choice for rings that take daily wear and tear, unless the stone is mounted in a protective setting, where it is shielded more. If you store peridot next to harder gemstones such as diamonds, sapphires, or rubies, you will inevitably end up with surface abrasions. For best results, use peridot in earrings or pendants, or in occasional wear pieces where contact with gritty surfaces stays minimal.
