How are rough gemstones sorted after mining?

After mining, the rough gems are mostly sorted entirely by hand, based on their mineral species, hue, potential size, shape and internal clarity. Often, the process happens under natural sunlight, using simple jeweller’s loupes, so things are seen up close.

The experts then look carefully at the rough stock to figure out what the maximum potential yield can be. They divide the high-grade stones, which will go toward precision faceting, from the lower-grade pieces that may be crafted into smooth cabochons, tumbled stones for finishing, or simply discarded. This first sorting step is crucial; it helps maximise the stone’s intrinsic value before it is passed to a master lapidary to be cut.
